[ TRENDING TAPESTRY ] Harper's Bazaar USA October 2012

Hugely popular this season, the tapestry aesthetic has graced runways and high streets alike, and when I stumbled across this richly ornate and luxuriantly feminine shoot by Photographer Richard Burbridge and Stylist Tony Irvine for Harper's USmy fingers began twitching, and alas to Wandering Threads it came.

One of this seasons best use of the trend (and one of my lifelong designer lustings) is Dolce & Gabbana, whose AW12 collection was positively bursting with baroque decadence. Synonymous with luxe fabrics and exquisite detailing, unsurprisingly the label is leading the trend with its rose motif body-con dresses and embroidered tapestry effect peplum corset tops, while others such as Balmain take brocade embellishment to a baroque extreme with gold threaded embroidery edged with thousands of light-catching pearls and crystals.

Of all the seasons to stop travelling and dedicate those extra funds to sprucing up a long-forlorn winter wardrobe, I couldn't have picked a time more apt!

I'm in love with all things tapestry. Perhaps it's that vintage (and at times rather kitsch) appeal) that sends my mind tumbling into visions of 17th century court ladies surrounded by Caravaggio paintings, just delicately stitching away...Whatever century it sends your mind to, the true beginnings of needlepoint tapestry (or tapestry embroidery as it's more accurately referred) actually stem back to Hellenistic times. However, we associate them (rightly so) with the baroque period due to it's rising popularity as a domestic craft during the 16th & 17th centuries. Apparently some rather famous figures were keen hobbyists, with Mary Queen of Scots (she had a lot of time on her hands...), Marie Antoinette and Queen Elizabeth I all being listed.

As always, a little history lesson for thread fans.

So, be it fashion, art or craft, for me tapestry will always signify a heritage fabric that exudes that wonderful sense of nostalgic craftsmanship, of cherished artistry and of time-honoured tradition.

[ GET YOUR COLOURS ON ] Barbour Jubilee Collection

Jubilee, Barbour Union Jack, Ladies International Swarovski Jacket, 2012, British flag

Cashing in on its status as a much loved British Heritage brand, Barbour have designed some pretty kick-ass products in time for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations. Check out the timely re-modeled, bestselling Barbour Union Jack International Swarovski jacket, for which Barbour have cleverly teamed up with crystal giants Swarovski, resulting in a little glistening Union Jack Swarovski Elements flag nestling upon the chest pocket. They've also added a super cool Union Jack lining which is so undeniably awesome that I'd probably turn the whole thing inside out. Snap it up quick though if you've got the cash because its a limited edition piece. Investment? Oh, I do think so.

Womens Union Jack Barbour Waxed Canvus Shopper, Satchel, Rucksack, Napsack, British Flag fashion, Jubilee fashion, Queen's Jubilee 2012

Oh, and one more thing, if your finding it hard to sheathe yourself in enough Britishness to double as a patriotic mascot, try one of these bags or (perhaps the hat?) on for size. Think of all the other celebratory Jubilee trinkets you could keep inside!

British collage, mini cooper, London underground, british post box stamp, english tea cups, Queen's Jubilee 2012

I'm so excited about this weekend's Jubilee celebrations that I'm determined to make Wandering Threads a haven of British heritage inspired happiness, if only for the coming week. I'm a proud Brit - cue friends rolling eyes as I gush once again of my love for all English traditions and heritage - so its only right that I should add a stream of celebratory Britishness to this here page. Despite economic woes, the past year has already seen a surge in patriotic fervor with all the hype surrounding the Royal Wedding last May (yes, of course I was there - I booked my flight to India the week after most deliberately!),

Sadly though, I'm missing the fabulous festivities back in the UK by but a few weeks as I am currently still slaving away in Sydney to fund my return. Nevertheless, I shall watch the media avidly from afar, cheering on old Liz in her 60th anniversary of her accession. So in the meantime, to kick start the festivities I bring you this montage of Britannia inspired awesomeness. Get your colours ready!

[ TRIBAL BRIT ] Burberry Prorsum SS 2012

tailored bohemian, British cool, ethnic luxury, Christopher Bailey, Burberry Spring Summer 2012, exotica, exotic prints, tribal style, ethnic style, wandering threads, ethnic inspired fashion, Burberry artisan

1. Woven Raffia and Printed Wedge Pumps 2. 130mm Wooden Beaded Sandals 3. Avonbrook Key Fob 4.TribalPrinted Woven Silk Dress 5. Hepburne Orange Ochre Bag 6. Woven Leather and Raffia Ballet Flats 7. Linen Cropped Jacket 8. Printed Silk and Cotton-blend Dress 9.Campanula Scarf

Ask me how I'd some up my personal style in as fewer words as possible and the answer could only be 'tailored bohemian'. Bit of a juxtaposition, I know.  By nature I may be a travel centric, ethnic style obsessive and hoarder of printed scarves and oversized gypsy earrings but by nurture I just can't bear scruff. Hailing from a quintessentially English town where blazers, starched white shirts and perfectly knotted ties were essential state school uniform, I spent my teens being chased by my mother wielding an iron and a bottle of shoe polish. Well, after 24 years of hassle over creases and frays all that fuss has certainly paid off and I've grown to appreciate the art of a perfectly shaped lapel and an impeccably ironed pleat.

Que the above from Burberry Prorsum SS 2012. A label that epitomises 21st century 'British cool', Burberry's typically British tailoring is continuously injected with an effortlessly youthful edge that, season after season, unfailingly appeals to both the young and the mature. First guesses as to why I'm head over heals this season? Yup, you've got it: Britain meets exotica aka 'tailored tribal chic'.

This collection is all about 'celebrat(ing) things that take time to do' as Creative Director and all-round fashion genius, Christopher Bailey puts it. Typical trenches and faultless tailoring embellished with beaded geometric patterns, raffia trims and boldly coloured block prints. This collections handcrafted, African touch is definitely pushing my ethnic obsessive buttons, and more importantly, hitting the nail on the head for spring's tribal trend too. This seasons footwear and accessories go straight to the top of my thread lust list. Long live Burberry!

[ FROM LONDON TO AUSTRALIA ] Mary Katrantzou for Topshop SS 2012

If you've been reading this blog for a while you'll know that I am totally, ridiculously obsessed with Mary Katrantzou (not the lady herself, mind you, although I'm sure she's wonderful). As I mentioned a few months ago while gushing over her AW2011/12 collection, I was lucky enough to be present at the London based designer's Central Saint Martins MA graduate show back in 2009 which propelled her to instant fashion fame. Being a Saint Martin's graduate myself, I like to keep on top of Alumni news, but this ones a little to hard to miss: Mary Katrantzou for Topshop SS 2012! Yesss! Finally myself and the rest of my twenty-something budget restrained fashion lovers can pick up some of these beauties for a fraction of the price! But I'm not in the UK I telepathically sense the question pondering your minds. Ah ha! My second piece of exciting news - Topshop has now arrived in Australia! My soon-to-be new home has finally embraced our coolest high street export along with online shopping mecca ASOS! Thank you Australia for your impeccable timing.
